Will I need a fishing licence?

Yes. You can purchase your licence online or I can arrange one for you.

What is the best time of the year to fish?

The annual fishing season starts on the 1st October and ends for most waters on the 31st April. Some waters stay open until the end of May and some are open all year.

What type of flies will I need?

In general, small flies work better on the Mataura. Nymphs: Pheasant Tail, Willow Grubs, Mataura Darter and emerger patterns that imitate mayflies. Dry flies: Dad’s Favourite, Blue Dun, Adams(tied parachute-style) Twilight Beauty, Wickham’s Fancy , Caddis, Coch-y-Bondhu, Dark Red Spinner Wet flies / Streamers - Early season: Gosling. invicta and spider patterns such as a March Brown Mid-late season: Greenwell’s Glory (wet), Alexandra, Claret and Mallard and spider patterns
